National Night Out 2025

Join the Pottawattamie County Sheriff's Office and the Council Bluffs Police Department for the City of Council Bluffs' biggest block party of the year. Visit with first responders and community personnel and see all their rigs. We will have: food, face painting, raffle prizes, bike events, a K9 demonstration, a helicopter landing, and more! It's a great night for the whole family to come hang with all of us!

Free parking is available in the garage at 4200 River's Edge Parkway.

Land Stewardship Series: Soft Trail Planning & Development

This hands-on series is designed for landowners, natural resource professionals, and outdoor enthusiasts looking to deepen their knowledge of managing Iowa’s unique ecosystems. Participants will explore topics such as tree and plant identification, invasive species management, herbicide application, equipment operation, trail design, tree and shrub removal, wildfire planning, and ecosystem restoration. Some classes will include fieldwork at off-site locations, offering real-world applications and insights.

Veterans Service Office in Avoca

The Pottawattamie County Veterans Service Office (VSO) staff will be onsite to support East Pottawattamie County residents the first and third Wednesday of each month. A VSO caseworker will be available and offering the same services that are also available at the VSO location in Council Bluffs. If given prior notice, the VSO staff is able to bring a pantry order with them. VSO clients are able to book appointments in this location in the same way they can book appointments in Council Bluffs. 

Walk-ins are welcome, however appointments are recommended. The VSO staff leaves promptly at 3 pm, so please plan accordingly and allow enough time to meet with your caseworker. 

Loess Hills Prairie Seed Harvest

Join our friends at Golden Hills RC&D and help collect native prairie seed! Volunteers will visit local prairie remnants and learn how to identify which plants are available for seed collection. The hand-collected seed will then be used for local prairie restoration and reconstruction projects. This event includes walking over steep, rugged terrain, so dress appropriately.

Monthly Avoca Passport Day

On the second Wednesday of each month, the Recorder's Office sets up shop at the Avoca Courthouse to provide greater access to the passport process to residents on the eastern side of the county. Passport services are offered from 9am-2pm each of the dates listed below.

• October 8, 2025
• November 12, 2025
• December 10, 2025
