The public can participate in the meetings by attending them in person in the Hearing Room on the 2nd floor of the Courthouse or electronically through Teams.

Public Health Open House

Pottawattamie County Public Health invites the local community to an open house on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Public Health Services Building located at 515 5th Avenue, Council Bluffs, IA 51503. 

This event offers a unique opportunity to explore the range of essential services housed within the facility, which opened to the public in November 2024. Services and departments within the building include Animal Control, Environmental Services, Health Services, Community Health, WIC, the county Medical Examiner, Disease Investigation, Epidemiology, and more.  

Guests can enjoy guided tours of the building, meet with staff from each program, and learn more about departmental highlights, service usage data, and photos from the building’s construction. Light refreshments will be available.  

The event is free and open to the public, and no RSVP is required.

Veterans Service Office in Avoca

The Pottawattamie County Veterans Service Office (VSO) staff will be onsite to support East Pottawattamie County residents the first and third Wednesday of each month. A VSO caseworker will be available and offering the same services that are also available at the VSO location in Council Bluffs. If given prior notice, the VSO staff is able to bring a pantry order with them. VSO clients are able to book appointments in this location in the same way they can book appointments in Council Bluffs. 

Walk-ins are welcome, however appointments are recommended. The VSO staff leaves promptly at 3 pm, so please plan accordingly and allow enough time to meet with your caseworker.

Trail Work Volunteer Signup | Morning Shift | National Trails Day

Due to the steep topography in the Loess Hills, a portion of Moonseed Trail has suffered significant erosion and trail damage from heavy rains. We need YOUR help to reroute a large portion of this trail and make it more sustainable.

Handline Deployment and Hose Advancement

The Oakland Fire Department is hosting a training event at the Fire Station, Handline Deployment and Hose Advancement, on June 7 at 1600, and we invite all surrounding Fire Departments to attend. This event is free of charge, and food will be provided. Participants are required to wear Bunker Gear, but SCBA is not required.

Monthly Avoca Passport Day

On the second Wednesday of each month, the Recorder's Office sets up shop at the Avoca Courthouse to provide greater access to the passport process to residents on the eastern side of the county. Passport services are offered from 9am-2pm each of the dates listed below.

• August 13, 2025
• September 10, 2025
• October 8, 2025
• November 12, 2025
• December 10, 2025

Please review the passport requirements at the link below and bring all of the necessary documents with you.

Insect Discovery Station

Calling all critter enthusiasts! Are you interested in all the little things that creep, crawl, hop and fly by?

Join us any time from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. and learn about insects, how to catch them, and find out just how amazing they are! One of our naturalists will be stationed at the Hohneke trailhead near the campground with nets and equipment to catch your little buggy friends. Don't want to touch them? No problem, check out a few from our insect collections, and get an up close view of them with a magnifier.
