Hitchcock Nature Center Lodge Deck and Railing Improvements

Deadline: April 24, 2024 at 12:00 p.m.

Pottawattamie Conservation has completed design for improvements and modifications to the Hitchcock Nature Center Lodge deck and railing, including the observation tower deck and railing.  We are seeking contractors to bid work and the plans/specs are provided in the attached document.

Bids can be mailed to 227 S 6th Street, Room 204 (Conservation Department Main Office), Council Bluffs, IA, 51501 or emailed to Jeff Franco at jeff.franco@pottcounty-ia.gov.  Bids will be opened and publicly read in the Conservation Department Main Office at 12:00 PM, Central Time, on April 24, 2024 or at such later time and place as may then be fixed.

Bids will be considered by the Owner at a public meeting to be held at Pottawattamie County Courthouse, 227 S 6th Street, Council Bluffs, IA at a date still to be determined. 

The general nature of the work is as follows:

The project involves replacing and/or reconfiguring four components of the deck and tower at Hitchcock Nature Center's Loess Hills Lodge.  Those components are:

1. Properly reconstruct the support structure of the deck's southwest corner as per engineering plans;
2. Replace all joists possessing an existing span of 24" on-center with joists possessing 12" on-center spans;
3. Replace composite decking material of lodge deck and tower with new composite decking material; and
4. Replace railing on the deck and tower with new as-specified railing design (spindle material will either be cedar or metal).

Additional details related to design are included in the engineering plans in the attached document.  The project is requesting the following decking be included in the bid:

A site visit with Hitchcock Nature Center staff is recommended. Please contact Jeff Franco, 402-680-6125 to set up a formal site visit.  Informal site visits can be conducted independently during park open hours, every day from 6am - 10pm.
