Emergency Management Exercise Initiatives

Like training, exercise is a critical component of preparedness. Exercises are evaluated activities that test and validate components of the Comprehensive Emergency Plan and associated procedures. Exercises allow responsible officials, managers & personnel to test their abilities to implement plans in a response scenario. The results of the exercise are used to update or amend plans based on the evaluated results. Exercises also help identify gaps in training and resources that may be required to address general or specific response scenarios.

There are several types of exercise activities that can be used to achieve the objectives identified above.

Types of exercise activities include:

Discussion-Based Exercises

  • Seminars
  • Workshops
  • Tabletop Exercises
  • Games

Operations-Based Exercises

  • Drills
  • Functional Exercises
  • Full-scale Exercises
