Summary

The Pottawattamie County Veterans Services Office is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Caseworker I to join our team! 

An individual in this position is responsible for assisting applicants in obtaining veterans benefits and programs through the application of state and federal laws, investigative work and referrals to other community programs. This role is crucial in helping local veterans in accessing and navigating benefits and programs.

Essential Functions

Assist veterans with completing applications for assistance, pension, service-connected disabilities, social security benefits, etc., including obtaining proper forms required to determine eligibility.
 
Network with other agencies and programs to aid veterans in obtaining assistance that is not provided by Veterans Affairs office.
 
Counsel and aid veterans in areas such as financial budgeting, job search skills and personal problems.
 
Serve as liaison between outside assistance agencies and the veteran seeking or receiving aid.
 
Serve as liaison between Iowa National Guard and the Veteran Affairs to provide assistance in filing for benefits.
 
Maintain, update and submit veteran files, records and reports regarding contact and assistance as mandated by state and federal law.
 
Accept, investigate and process all applications for assistance, including completion of all paperwork required under state and federal law.
 
Interview applicants for assistance, in person and on the telephone, to obtain documentation and information required to process the application.
 
Greet individuals who come to the department, ascertain their needs, direct them to the appropriate sources for assistance and/or independently answer their questions regarding routine departmental procedures and regulations.

Answer the telephone, take messages, refer calls to the appropriate personnel for assistance or answer questions according to established departmental procedures.
 
Maintain accurate computer input, processing and retrieval functions for all departmental forms and data.
 
Maintain file system, type reports, records and correspondence and sort departmental mail.
 
Conduct house calls to applicants as necessary to obtain required information.
 
Process all grave registrations received from morticians.
 
Perform other duties as directed or as the situation dictates 

Essential Knowledge, Experience, and Ability

Good knowledge of state and federal laws, which mandate benefits, procedures and regulations pertaining to veterans affairs.
 
Good knowledge of community resources and programs available as referrals for applicants.
 
General knowledge of and ability to utilize interviewing techniques.
 
General knowledge of and ability to utilize research and investigation techniques.
 
Good knowledge of basic computer skills and data entry and retrieval procedures.
 
Ability to compile and submit required reports and statistics obtained through personal interviews and investigations.
 
Ability to deal courteously and tactfully with the general public, government officials and fellow employees. 

Essential Education, Certification, and/or Licenses

Must possess a valid driver's license from the State of Iowa and maintain it through out the course of employment.
 
Must attend required yearly training as provided by the State Commission of Veteran Affairs.
