An open burning ban has been implemented and is effective at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 18, 2025 for all of Pottawattamie County. The ban prohibits all open and controlled burning in Pottawattamie County, including all incorporated city limits within the county until further notice.
The dry vegetative fuel conditions, ongoing moderate drought, and below normal precipitation outlooks for the next thirty to sixty days necessitate additional prevention measures be implemented to help mitigate the potential for large, uncontrollable fires. The precipitation anticipated over the next 24-30 hours will have little impact as above normal temperatures are expected to return to the region and drought conditions forecast to persist. The burn ban is anticipated to remain in place until vegetative conditions significantly improve.
Residents are advised to immediately discontinue any open burning and are reminded to never throw out cigarettes from vehicles. Violations of a burn ban can subject a person to criminal and civil liabilities for any damages, losses, or injuries resulting from a fire.
Visit the Emergency Management Agency website for more information on burn bans and the law at: https://www.pottcounty-ia.gov/emergency_management/fire_conditions/.
Residents are also encouraged to sign up for AlertIowa at the Emergency Management Agency website to receive alerts for fire danger, evacuation notices, severe weather threats, and community emergency notifications.
