911 Communications

The Pottawattamie County 911 Communications Center consists of 30 dedicated personnel, providing a support role for operational public safety agencies within Pottawattamie County, Iowa.

Mission Statement

The Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office Division of Communications is dedicated to serving as the vital link between the public and public safety organizations through responsiveness while serving the citizens of Pottawattamie County with the highest level of courtesy, commitment, integrity and professionalism.


The 911 Communications Division plays a critical role in the delivery of all Police, Fire and Medical Services within Pottawattamie County, Iowa.

The Pottawattamie County Communications Center is the public safety answering point (PSAP) for all of Pottawattamie County, including the City of Council Bluffs and Carter Lake, Iowa. Also, the Communications Center receives calls and dispatches public safety services for the following cities:

  • Avoca
  • Carson
  • Carter Lake
  • Council Bluffs
  • Crescent
  • Hancock
  • Lewis Township
  • Macedonia
  • McClelland
  • Minden
  • Neola
  • Oakland
  • Shelby
  • Treynor
  • Underwood
  • Walnut

Several times a day when emergencies (as well as non-emergencies) arise, the public depends on public safety responders. The citizen(s) in need of help call 911 or other emergency service numbers.

The 911 Communications Center receives these calls and the communications center personnel use the radio communications system and send the proper public safety response.

The Pottawattamie County 911 Communications Center provides 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, combined public safety communications services for:

  • Pottawattamie County Sheriff's Office
  • 14 Professional Volunteer Fire & Rescue Departments
  • Council Bluffs Fire & Rescue Department
  • Council Bluffs Police Department
  • Carter Lake Police Department
  • Avoca Police Department
  • Numerous City & County Support Services
  • Nearly 88,000 citizens covering over 960 square miles
